CROWN (CoRe Outcomes in Women’s and Newborn health) Initiative

Professor Khalid Khan established the CROWN international initiative, bringing together journal editors worldwide, to harmonise outcome reporting in women’s health research. It addressed the widespread, unwarranted variation in reporting of outcomes which leads to research waste. This problem also makes a comparison between and combination of results across studies difficult, if not impossible. As a result, there can be difficulties in synthesising evidence to generate recommendations for clinical practice which is detrimental to the healthcare provision. The Initiative has over 80 member Journals. The initiative is to improve the standard of future research by encouraging the development, use and dissemination of core outcomes sets. It was supported by the BMA Strutt and Harper grant in 2015 awarded to Dr Natalie Cooper and Professor Khan, both featured in the video.
